The University of Economics –Varna Library was established in 1920. It takes pride in a rich collection of more than 330 000 volumes of scientific literature including books, periodicals, standards, electronic publications in Bulgarian and foreign languages. The Library preserves valuable editions from the end of XVIII and the beginning of XIX century, amongst which the first book on trade printed in Bulgaria, published in 1858 in Tsarigrad. This is the second library as part of a higher education institution in Bulgaria, alongside Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The Library became a depository one of the World Bank in 1996. In 2007 the Library was designated as a European Documentation Centre (EDC). The EDC is a major source of information and expertise about the institutions, activities and policies of the European Union (EU). The University of Economics Library is located across a total area of 2100 square metres on the 5th and 6th floor and two underground repositories in the main corpus of the University. The Library consists of: a reading area with 4 facilitated halls, with over 200 study desks for students and tutors, a computer area providing database resources for study and research purposes, a work area assisting the visually impaired, scanners and copy machines at a self-service point. Throughout 2011, the University Library was fully renovated and modernized by implementing the new RFID ( Radio- frequency identification) technology in control of the book collection, access to the library, book services to the patrons ( loans and returns), copy machine services, statistics and management. The digital centre is equipped with a robotic scanner of high class quality, a planetary scanner and specialized software. The University of Economics Library - Varna is one of the most modern academic libraries in Bulgaria in terms of its architectural aesthetic, its technical provision and systematic service departments. With the use of the library’s electronic catalogue documents dated from 1983 are accessible to all students, tutors and visitors. In addition, there is also access to the full texts of over 5500 books, articles and reports. The library of UE-Varna is continuously upgrading its services and is striving to keep up with the rapidly evolving field of information science and technology. Currently, it provides access to some of the world’s foremost research databases of scientific publishers like EBSCO, Elsevier, Clarivate Analytics and Emerald. |
