The Department of Commodity Science at University of Economics – Varna was founded in 1948, along with its programme in commodity science. The first Rector of the Higher School of Commerce, Professor Tsani Kaliandzhiev, was the founder of commodity science in Bulgaria.
The Department of Commodity Science has provided students training in the undergraduate BSc Commodity Science and Customs Operations programme since 2016. Until 2016, the department offered the BSc Commodity Science. The department offers the MSc Commodities Quality and Expertise programme.
Students gain deep understanding about the contents, features, quality and safety of commodities; standardisation of commodities; quality management systems; commodity and customs control; customs operations; commercial business management. Students develop skills how to practically apply theoretical knowledge.
For over 70 years the Department of Commodity Science at University of Economics – Varna has been the only national centre that trains professionals with degrees in commodity quality, control and expertise. The development of the Department of Commodity Science has been determined by the work of the highly competent faculty members, the flexible teaching and contemporary facilities.
Graduating students have plenty of successful job opportunities in business organizations, the customs service and public administration. The department is a prestigious research centre that trains PhD students and conducts research of high academic and practical value. This research focuses on issues important to the consumers such as the characteristics, quality and safety of commodities, their standardisation, and certification, among others.
The Department of Commodity Science has had a long standing collaboration with similar local and international educational institutions: in Poland, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, and other countries. The department has been a preferred partner and participant in national and international projects, and a member of the International Organization in Commodity Science and Technologies.
