Language training at University of Economics – Varna enjoys a rich legacy. It was launched with the establishment of the Higher School of Commerce in 1920.
The Faculty of Languages was founded on 13 October 2000 with a decision of the UE – Varna Academic Council. It comprises two departments: the Department of Slavic languages and the Department of Western European Languages. It provides university students training in languages and training in Bulgarian written business communication. It also offers a nine-month prep course in Bulgarian for non-Bulgarian students and a 9-month prep course in English to students who would like to study at university in English.
UE – Varna full-time and part-time undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students learn languages under curricula compiled by the relevant core departments, which specify the type of training, the duration of language courses, the specialised nature of training, and type of course assessment.
There are over 15 members of faculty. They consistently upgrade their academic qualifications locally and internationally. Along with teaching and researching, they also do translation and editing work. They are examiners in English, German and French for internationally recognized language exams (Cambridge, TestDaf, TCF). They provide professional consulting services, for example in international projects and programmes, among others.
The Faculty members are pro-active in EU and EEA mobility programmes. Within the Erasmus + Programme for example, they administer language exams as part of the student selection process at UE – Varna; they teach incoming international students and they are guest lecturers at partner universities.
The collaboration with partner universities in different projects (for example, PROMINENCE) has led to the launch of new interdisciplinary courses and joint projects and publications.
