University of Economics – Varna

Department of Physical Education and Sports

The Department was established in 1949 by Delcho Delev, who was joined by Asen Simidov in 1950 and Iliya Kapitanov in 1951.

The Department-trained university sports teams have had outstanding achievements. In team sports we have been the national student champions for 10 times, we have been runners-up for 17 times and we have won the bronze medals on 16 occasions. Our student sports players have also excelled in individual sports, having won 177 gold, 109 silver and 115 bronze medals.

The University Sports Centre provides multiple opportunities for students to choose from: students can play volleyball, table tennis, basketball or they can work out in the gym.

The university sports teams in volleyball, table tennis, basketball, swimming, football, running, and orienteering have won top awards in regional, national and international competitions on multiple occasions.

The sports instructors at the Department of Physical Education and Sports are top-performing experts with a proven track record in a range of sports. Apart from training students in class, members of faculty also offer individual instruction, helping students improve their motor skills relevant to their needs and interests.

The Department greatly encourages and fully supports students who have already achieved results in other sports and would like to further improve their performance there.

Students are involved in other sports activities such as clubs in modern gymnastics, hip-hop and folk dancing. These clubs performances contribute to the university events calendar and the cultural exchange between universities.

With the support of the university academic governance, the Department of Physical Education and Sports is focused on increasingly expanding the range of sports offered on the university premises.
