The former mayor of Rome Prof. Ignazio Marino participated as an online panelist in the International Staff Week, organized by the International Relations Office at the University of Economics – Varna from 03 to 07 July 2023.
He presented the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA, with a focus on successful models of cooperation with European Universities. Prof. Marino noted that American universities are open to partnership with other HEIs from Europe and the world.
As one of the most prominent specialists in the field of transplantology in the world, Prof. Ignazio Marino has an impressive autobiography. He is renowned for being the first doctor in Italy to transplant an organ to an HIV positive patient.
Prof. Marino is a board member at some of the world’s most famous universities and hospitals – Pittsburg, Philadelphia, New York (USA), Rome, Palermo (Italy), and others.
From 2006 to 2013 Prof. Ignazio Marino is a senator in the Upper House of the Italian Parliament, and from 2013 to 2015 serves as the Mayor of Rome. At the end of his panel session, Prof. Marino expressed his gratitude for the invitation, extended by the University of Economics – Varna, and the opportunity to take part in the event.
Together with Prof. Marino, Assoc. Prof Emilia Zankina also gave a presentation about the opportunities for education in Philadelphia, USA. She pointed out that the universities in this state are among the world’s top HEIs and are careful with the selection of their international partners. Nevertheless, they are more open to the idea of expanding their partnership with foreign universities in some scientific fields.
Temple University served as an example of this, as it has affiliated branches on three continents and more than 400 international cooperation contracts with foreign HEIs and organizations.
Assoc. Prof. Zankina is a scholar in the field of political science and international relations, Vice-Rector for Global Engagement at the American University Temple, and Dean of its affiliated branch in Rome, Italy.
Prof. Marino and Assoc. Prof. Zankina’s participation was possible because of the support, provided by the USA Embassy in Bulgaria.
