Doctoral Degree

General Rule

Application
Foreign citizens, wishing to enroll for doctoral studies, apply to the Rector of University of Economics - Varna , filling in an application form, which is to be supplemented by the following:

  1. An autobiography;
  2. A copy of the higher education document, attesting to the candidate's holding a master degree;
  3. A health certificate, issued a month before the date of application at the earliest, verified by the respective authorities in the country the person comes from;
  4. A list of publications, if any;
  5. A copy of citizenship papers - only for applicants who hold double citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian;
  6. Legalised translation into Bulgarian of a document, issued by accredited authorities, certifying the applicant’s right to pursue his/her studies at the higher education institutions in the country, issuing the Master degree diploma;
  7. Two photos.

The documents in points 2, 3 and 6 above must be legalized, translated and verified in conformity with the provisions of international conventions of Republic of Bulgaria with the country in which those have been issued, and if there are none - in the due form for legalization, translation and authentication of documents and other papers.

Approval procedure

The decision on the candidate's approval is taken by the Rector on the motion of the respective Department within a month from the filing of the papers.
The documents of the approved individuals (except those holding double citizenship) are sent to the Ministry of Education and Science, with a view to opening the procedure of issuing long-term stay visas.
The Ministry of Education and Science issues a Certificate of Admission to applicants for study in Republic of Bulgaria .
Instruction in the doctoral studies is given in Bulgarian language.
University of Economics - Varna organizes Courses in Bulgarian language for students including doctoral students. The course's duration is 8 months. It starts on 1 October and finishes on 30 May.
Individuals who have successfully completed the language and the specialized training are issued a certificate.

Enrollment
The Rector issues an order for the enrollment of approved candidates for doctoral studies on the basis of a resolution of the respective Academic Committee and upon submission of a certificate of the completion of the course in Bulgarian language.

Training
The training of doctoral students is provided according to individual study plans and includes sitting for doctoral examinations and working out of a dissertation.

Study periods
The study period of the full-time doctoral studies is 3 years, while that of the part-time - 4 years /following a preparatory course in Bulgarian language/. That period may be shortened by the doctoral student, provided he/she has fulfilled his/her duties of the individual doctoral study plan ahead of schedule.

Tuition fees

  1. Doctoral students from EU Member Countries and the European Economic Area:

Full-time studies – 15 minimum wages
Part-time studies – 12 minimum wages

  1. Doctoral students from other foreign countries:

Preparatory course – 2 500 Euro
Full-time studies – 3 500 Euro
Part-time studies – 3 500 Euro

Independent Doctoral Studies for Foreign Citizens

The applicants for doctoral studies who are foreign citizens apply to the Rector of the University of Economics - Varna, filling out an application form, which is to be supplemented by the following:
1. A Draft Dissertation in Bulgarian language.
2. An autobiography;
3. A copy of the higher education document, attesting to the candidate's holding a master degree;
4. A health certificate, issued a month before the date of application at the earliest, verified by the respective authorities in the country the applicant comes from;
5. A list of publications, if any;
6. A copy of citizenship papers - for applicants who hold double citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian;
7. A certificate of recognition of the higher education degree, if the diploma was issued by a foreign school of higher education;
8. Two photos.

The documents in points 3 and 4 above must be legalized, translated and verified in conformity with the provisions of international conventions of Republic of Bulgaria with the country in which those have been issued, and if there are none - in the due form for legalization, translation and authentication of documents and other papers.

Within 14 days from the filing of the application the Rector is to take a decision and refer the materials to the competent Department. The application and the submitted materials are to be considered in the respective Department within 3 months.

The Head of the Department is to refer the matter to the respective Faculty Council for making a decision within 10 days.
The Rector issues an order for the enrollment of approved candidates for doctoral studies on the basis of the resolution of the Faculty Council.

The minimum study period for the Independent Doctoral Studies at the University of Economics - Varna is 4 years - after the acquisition of master's degree.

If all the duties of the individual study plan have been performed ahead of schedule and after a decision has been taken in view of opening a procedure on the dissertation defense, the study period of the doctoral studies may be shortened.

Instruction in the doctoral studies is given in Bulgarian language. The assistance of translators/interpreters is allowed, provided the latter are hired and paid by the doctoral student him/herself.

The doctoral study and defense materials are prepared solely in Bulgarian language.
The dissertation defense for acquiring the degree of "doctor" and "doctor of science" is public and carried out only in Bulgarian - the official language of Republic of Bulgaria. The assistance of translators/interpreters is allowed, provided the latter are hired and paid by the doctoral student him/herself.

The training of doctoral students is provided according to an individual study plan, which sets out not only the doctoral examinations and the deadlines for the passing of those but also the stages and terms for the working out (completion) of the dissertation.
The documents of the approved individuals (except those holding double citizenship) are sent to the Ministry of Education and Science, with a view to opening the procedure of issuing long-term stay visas.
The Ministry of Education and Science issues a Certificate of Admission to applicants for study in Republic of Bulgaria.

The application fee is paid at the time of submitting the application for enrollment in the doctoral studies programme.
The annual tuition fee is paid in two installments. The first installment (1/2 of the annual fee) is deposited within 30 days of the resolution of the Faculty Council to enroll the doctoral student.
Each subsequent installment is deposited after 6 months.
Every lawful extension of the doctoral studies period is paid for under the conditions outlined above.
